Thinking Lunches - Thursday 7th February

Sally Seddon, the Volunteer Engagement Manager for Shared Interest will be talking about Investing in a Fairer World.

The talk is at Marlborough Road Methodist Church, Marlborough Road, St Albans AL1 3XQ
12.30pm to 1.30pm, drinks are provided but please bring your own sandwiches!

Sally joined Shared Interest in November 2008.  Having spent some time volunteering in Tanzania she became interested in the concept of giving a helping hand rather than a hand out, something that fair trade, and Shared Interest, has at its heart.

Established in 1990, Shared Interest is a community benefit society which aims to alleviate poverty in disadvantaged communities.  By lending finance to those working in agriculture and handcrafts we enable them to trade their way out of poverty.  Our UK members share this aim and invest what they can afford to support others.

As the Volunteer Engagement Manager for Shared Interest Sally’s role involves working in partnership with their network of volunteers who support them in a number of different roles.  She is responsible for engaging their volunteers in effective and meaningful activity to support their mission.

In representing Shared Interest at events across the UK Sally engages with the public on the impact ethical investment can have.  She sits on Shared Interest’s Monitoring and Evaluation committee which is developing an understanding and communication of their impact as a social lender.

Sally has chosen the Shared Interest Foundation as her charity.  They are based in Newcastle upon Tyne, support fair trade businesses across Africa. Through their projects they provide support and training with the belief that socially responsible businesses are a route to building sustainable employment opportunities enabling producers and farmers to work their way out of poverty. Their newest project, Bees for Business, is training women in rural Burkina Faso to become beekeepers, providing them with the knowledge and tools to develop a businesses, increase their income and create a better life for themselves and their family.
